For treatment of acute problems, modern medicine is a miracle. But for treatment of chronic pain and disease, medicine has lost it's way. On the one hand, researchers have learned much over the past 2 decades about why people get sick. However, this information is rarely, if ever, incorporated into regular medical clinics. Most physicians continue to treat disease the same as we have for a century... looking for the magic pill that will make you better. These pills block the body's natural metabolic pathways. Occasionally the pharmeceutical industry does come up with a "home run", a drug that really does address the cause of a problem. But much more often, a drug alters the bodies metabolism in MANY ways. This might result in a temporary improvement in something, but often results in side effects down the road.
PATIENT CENTERED vs. PROBLEM CENTERED: Traditional medical practices are PROBLEM CENTERED; functional medicine is PATIENT CENTERED. Imbalance of underlying functional systems affect your entire body, not just what you are complaining of today. Traditional medicine has a laundry list of diagnosis, each of which has a "code" attached. Doctors try to find just the right diagnosis with the belief that if you find the right diagnosis, there will be a "magic pill", surgery, or some other therapy that will cure your problem. Doctor's tend to focus on just one problem at a time. It just isn't that simple. While we look for these diagnosis primarily to assist you with insurance coverage, the focus of our treatment is to restore your entire body's systems to balance, which, come think of it, is actually simpler to try to sort out the magic pill of the day.
BASED ON BIOCHEMICAL INDIVIDUALITY: No 2 people's metabolism is exactly alike. Our current metabolism is a product of our genetic makeup and our environmental uniqueness.
DYNAMIC vs. STATIC: One's metabolism changes with different factors in your nutrition and environment. By controlling one's nutrition and environment, we can manipulate the functional systems in your metabolism. However, changing any one system causes the other systems to change as well.
WEB LIKE INTERCONNECTIONS: The different functional systems are all related to each other. Change the balance of any single system, and you change the relationship of all of them. Often as you improve the balance of any system, other systems tend to come closer to balance.
HEALTH IS A POSITIVE VITALITY: In traditional medicine, if your tests are "normal" your doc says you are ok, even if you feel horrible. We view health as more then the absence of disease. We view true health as the optimal balance of all of your metabolic systems together.
PROMOTION OF ORGAN RESERVE: People in excellent health can build up a "reserve" which they can draw on in cases of unexpected illness or injury. Work on building your health. Just because you are not sick does NOT mean you are healthy.
NATURAL VS. ALLOPATHIC: Utilize the body's natural ability to heal whenever possible. More important, avoid utilizing therapies that impair the body's natural ability to heal.
ANABOLIC (characterized by or promoting constructive metabolism) VS. CATABOLIC (characterized by destructive metabolism). It is surprising how much done in traditional musculoskeletal medicine works to break down the body rather then build it up. As a traditional orthopedist for over 20 years, I know that most people get the same treatments for almost everything in an orthopedic office:
Nonsteriodal AntiInflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) = Catabolic
Steroid Injections (sometimes pills) = Catabolic
Physical Therapy, Bracing, and Surgery are Neutral and sometimes Anabolic when appropriately performed for appropriate indications.
ANTIAGING: There is now substantial evidence (particularly telomere data) indicating that one should be active and vigorous well past 100 and even 110, and die somewhere around 120. Hormonal decline is a primary cause of premature aging after the age of 50. There are a variety of clinics around the country that now specialize in hormone balance therapy (including growth hormone) and this has proven to be quite beneficial for most, but not all, who have tried it. Why not all? All the growth hormone in the world won't help you much if you have a very large imbalance in one of your underlying fuctional metabolic systems!
Welcome to our site. I hope it insires you to get your own metabolic systems back into balance! Dr. Bowman
The fact is, we now know that virtually all chronic disease is caused by one or more imbalances in your bodies underlying physiological ("functional") systems. Restore these systems to balance, and virtually always you will restore your health.
